Category: The X Factor

Not the end for Diana Vickers: Well, there you have it.  She had the most talent out of all the semi-finalists and she got voted off the show. Yes, Diana Vickers has left The X Factor. I didn’t want it to happen but I guessed that it might happen. To be honest, it is a tad annoying. Diana is a million times better than (in my personal opinion) the school boy who, for some strange reason, is in next week’s final.

Yes, I know, thousands of people with nothing better to do joined Facebook groups complaining about Diana’s hand gestures and vocal quirks. But let’s be serious for a moment: Diana Vickers was the first X Factor contestant I’ve seen who was the slightest bit different from the whole pop-one-hit-wonders crowd you usually get on these kind of shows. Diana would have fitted in well in the “folk” music genre and helped to make that genre more popular with the “youths” out there who normally spend their hard earned pocket money on the latest Chart nonsense. Yet again, The X Factor has proved to be a “how many people can you get to make a phone call in an hour” competition instead of a music competition.

Diana’s hand gestures and vocal quirks were what made her different and her difference allowed her talent to come to the fore.  I sincerely hope this is not the last we see of such an amazing talent. Let the message go forth from this time and place: release a Diana Vickers album and I’ll buy it and I won’t be the only one who does.

Diana Vickers: I’m getting old. Ok, maybe not that old. But these days, pop music doesn’t really appeal to me. I cut my teeth as a music journalist and let’s just say I’ve heard a lot of music. My opinion isn’t any more valid than other people’s but I am blessed with the soul of a poet and cursed with the eye of a critic. Forgive my loss of modesty there. Basically, what I’m saying is: I don’t usually watch reality TV talent shows and it’s been a long, long time since I heard a really, really good singer emerge from the pop music world.

But this year, something’s changed. I know this is meant to be a blog about languages and I’ll get back to writing about the challenge very soon. But can I just say that- whilst all the X Factor finalists are very talented- Diana Vickers stands out as superb. She’s something new. She makes any song she sings her own and puts unique, captivating twists on everything she sings. Her voice is amazing and, whatever happens in the coming weeks or in the final, it would be great to have this truly talented woman in the music industry.

You all have your own opinions on this, I’m sure and I respect them. But personally, I think Diana Vickers is fantastic. If you can, please show her your support on the Saturday evening live shows by voting for her.
